Michael has always enjoyed music. There was always music playing during family celebrations, and there were always people singing along. They listened to all kinds of music, from opera to the Kingston Trio, and back to the Bee-Gees. That experience helped him become comfortable exploring music. He played saxophone in school band for a few years, and in high school, Michael got involved in choir and musical theater. That took any stage fright he may have once had away.
As far as guitar is concerned, it is a byproduct of a career ending injury he sustained while playing football and wrestling at West Point. He fractured two vertebrae, and while recovering from injury, he used boredom, a roommate's guitar, and the internet to teach himself some guitar chords. The more he learned, the more he wanted to play. What started as a few Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, and Townes Van Zandt songs has evolved into being a full-blown guitar junky!
Michael began writing songs, and connected with his hometown friends Ian and Johnny while they were recording with the Beach Bum Band. After sharing the studio and stage a few times, a new musical alliance was forged, and Michael has begun jamming full time as a Beach Bum!
