Ian Roque
A.K.A. "Chavez"

Guitar / Vocals / Percussion / Bass

Starboard Rail

Ian Roque, otherwise known as "Chavez" by some of his close friends, was born on St. Patrick's Day 1976 in Chicago, IL.   For those of you who are unaware of St. Patrick's Day, it's March 17.  While he does celebrate St. Patrick's Day for many reasons, we assure you that he is not Irish.

Yet he is of Filipino descent, and enjoys traveling to places where his warm blooded nature would take him.  All it took to start off this journey would be a trip to the Phillipines at the early age of seven.

Ian got his initial start on the piano during the 2nd grade.  As descendant from a long line of musicians, his parents thought it to be right.  This lasted for about a year so that he could pursue other activities such as basketball and baseball. He wanted to play football, but his parents wouldn't sign the permission slip.

Come 6th grade, he became a member of his grade school's band, specifically the percussion section.  The rhythm would be developed playing instruments such as the Marimbas, Timpani, Chimes, Drums, and other percussive instruments. In 7th grade Ian and 4 other percussion members took state in a small percussion ensemble.

In 8th grade was when the guitar was picked up for the first time after an arrangement with his parents to take guitar lessons as long as he agreed to take tennis lessons (who knew).

In high school is where he ran into Johnny Russler.  Ian initially tried out for the band as a guitarist, when Johnny saw a drum kit sitting in the corner of the room.  That sealed the deal and Ian became the drummer for both Johnny's and Ian's first rock band.

After high school, Ian went off to Iowa State University where music would be put on hold for a little while to pursue a computer engineering degree.  He would become something of a computer literate person, as well as something of an electronics person.  During the time at school, numerous trips to various places would take place, mostly during spring break.

Paragliding in Acapulco, Mexico
Due to Ian's traveling nature, he has taken an interest in sailboats and planes.  Put the two together, and it produces his interest in seaplanes.  He is an avid enthusiast of seaplanes and a member of the Seaplanes Pilots Association.  Now he only wishes he could afford to take flying lessons, let alone own a seaplane.

A certain roommate of Ian's knew of his seaplane interest and introduced him to a book entitled "Where is Joe Merchant," by none other than Jimmy Buffett.  Soon after came the Buffett music, the guitar was picked up again, and the rest is history.  The tropical hidden within him escaped from his engineering shell, and would be the start of a beach bum to be.

Mazatlan, Mexico After graduating college with a B.S. in Computer Engineering, and working for a major corporation (we won't tell who), he would reunite with Johnny Russler once again.

Currently, Ian's now laid off from that major corporation, and continues making music that both Johnny and Ian have come to enjoy.  Singing stories of the Caribbean, Reggae, Calypso, the laid back life, and more.

While the trips do not come as often as he would like these days, he still makes every effort to be the bum that he can be.

Freeport, Bahamas
All Ian needs is a hammock with a good book in one hand and a cold beer in the other.  (Freeport, Bahamas... Thanks "D")

"In some distant island away from fast life
Lies a house along the sea
Where I can lay in a hammock
with no one to bother me."
